Gospel in a 'Nutshell'

Each One Teach One

The "Each One Teach One" Project is an initiative of Mansfield Christian Reformed Church.

Our Vision is to take the Gospel to the people
  • By spreading evangelism oriented Cell Groups all over the city
  • By teaching every Cell Group Leader how to share the Gospel with non-believers
  • By encouraging every Cell Group Leader to teach his Cell Group members to learn from Christ independently

Please feel free to share the "Gospel in a Nutshell" with as many people as possible. This was the heart's desire and last commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, before He ascended to heaven.
  • Please do not change the content of the "Gospel in a Nutshell", or use it in any printed form or electronic copy, without our written consent! Rather refer others to this website! We thank "Evangelism Explosion" for allowing us to use some of their concepts in this document.
  • Please consider using the Spiritual Growth Program: Phase 1 when guiding new Christians in their spiritual growth.

1. Gospel in a “Nutshell”

The Gospel
  • Grace
  • God
  • Man
  • Jesus Christ
  • Faith
The Commitment

2. Introduction: Question 1

  •  Do you know for certain that if you were to die today you would go to heaven?
    • You don’t think anyone could really be certain?
    • It is possible to be certain, for that is the reason the Bible was written
    • “I write these things to you… so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13)
  • May I share with you how I came to be certain that I have eternal life?

3. Introduction: Question 2

  • Maybe I should ask you another question
  • Suppose you were to die today and stand before God and He were to ask you, “Why should I let you into My heaven?” What would you say?
    • You say you tried to live a good life (keep the Ten Commandments)
    • I have good news for you.

 4. Gospel: Grace

  • I always thought heaven has to be worked for, earned, deserved
  • Then I discovered that heaven is absolutely a free gift
    • “… the gift of God is eternal life…” (Romans 6:23)
  • Do you want to know who gets it, and how we can be certain that we have it?

 5. Gospel: God’s Love

  • It is all about the love of God!

6. Gospel: God’s Love

  • God created you in order to be your God and to love you.
    • He loved you even before you were born (Psalm 139:15,16)
    • He chose you before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight (Ephesians 1:4a)
7. Gospel: God’s Covenant

  • God made a covenant, promising to be the loving God of nations and generations, inviting them to love Him back and to spend eternity with Him
    • “I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you” (Genesis 17:7)
    • Through the Bible, God has been reminding all of us ever since, of His invitation to love Him back (James1:18).

 8. Gospel: God’s Image

  • God also created you in His own image as His representative (Genesis 1:27)
    • “God created man in His own image… male and female… blessed them and said to them, ‘… fill the earth… rule… over every living creature… work… and take care of it’” (Genesis 1:27,28, 2:15)

 9. Gospel: Man’s Problem

  • Man is a sinner
  • Man is spiritually dead

10. Gospel: Man’s Problem

  • Problem is that we choose to ignore God our Creator… not to love Him back
  • We choose to live with our backs towards God… and this is called “sin”.
    • God is like light. Living with your back towards God, means that you are working in the darkness of your own shadow. That is why sinners are like blind people in darkness, performing the deeds of darkness… hurting God, themselves and others  (1 John 1:5)

 11. Gospel: Man's Problem
  • Although God loves us, He is also holy
  • He finds sin unacceptable
  • He does not allow us into His presence along with our sin
    • “Without holiness, no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14)
  • The consequence of our sin is that we can not spend eternity in the holy presence of God as long as we are guilty of sin

12. Gospel: Man's Problem

  • God is just and righteous and promised to deal with our sin
    • “The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23)
    • “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magical arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:8)
    • We have to suffer the eternal consequences (wages) of our sin

 13. Gospel: God’s Law

  •  God is merciful and loves us
  • He wants to save us from suffering the eternal consequences of our sin… He wants us eternally in heaven with Him
  • In order to save us, God wants us to understand that we are sinners and that we can not save ourselves from the eternal consequences of our sin!

 14. Gospel: God’s Law

  • So He gave us the Ten Commandments as a “mirror”, so we could see our own sin… (Exodus 20:1-17)
  • He also gave us a summary of the “mirror”
    • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart… soul… strength… mind… and your neighbour as yourself” (Luke10:27)

 15. Gospel: God’s Law

  • Look in the mirror of God’s Law
  • Have you told a lie, stolen something, used God’s name in vain?
    • “Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it” (James 2:10)
  • Do you see in the mirror a sinner deserving the wages of sin?
  • I’m sure you will say “yes”, just like the rest of us
    • “… through the law we become conscious of sin” (Romans 3:20)

 16. Gospel: A Saviour

  •  There is none of us good enough to deserve heaven through our good deeds, because God’s standard is perfect holiness
    • “all of us have sinned” (Romans 3:23)
    • “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves…” (1 John 1:8)
  • Sin is the reason why none of us can earn our way into heaven… we can’t save ourselves!
  • In order to save us, God wants us to understand that we need a Saviour

 17. Gospel: A Saviour

  • Our Saviour needs to be fully God and fully man, that could die the second death in our place, and who could rise from the dead to ensure a place for us in heaven

  •  Jesus Christ is fully God… the second person of the Trinity, the Creator of the Universe
    •  “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:1,14)
  • Jesus Christ is also fully man. In Him God became like us in human flesh (In Matthew 1:23)

18. Gospel: Jesus Christ

  • The Good News is that God kept his covenant promise by sending his own Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer the consequences of our sins on the cross on our behalf.
  • Although Jesus Christ was without sin, God dealt with Him as a sinner in our place, so that we, through faith in Him, could be found not guilty of our sin anymore.

19. Gospel: Jesus Christ

·         “…the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)
·         Jesus Christ in our place, as our substitute, paid the penalty for our sin… and bought a place for us in heaven with His blood…
  • God therefore offers this place to us freely as a gift (Romans 6:23)

20. Gospel: Jesus Christ

  • The whole Bible is about one transaction
  • Imagine all your sins are recorded in this book in my hand… this is your problem… your sin keeps you out of heaven
  • Suppose my other hand represents Jesus on the cross. God has laid your sins upon Him, while He hung on the cross (transfer the book to the “Jesus” hand).
  21. Gospel: How to Receive the Gift

  • Turn Back

  22. Gospel: Turn Around!

  • Because we are sinners, Jesus came to us where we are, with an invitation to  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 4:17)
  • “Repent” means to be converted… to turn around, back to God your Creator who gave you life… who wants to spend eternity with you!
  • When you turn around, you bring your deeds into the light of His presence, so that you can see yourself clearly in the mirror of His law… what you have done wrong… what your sin looks like!

  23. Gospel: Say You are Sorry

  • It is necessary to tell Him that you are sorry for your sins (confess). Confession is like someone who is bankrupt, coming to his creditor, falling on his knees before him and begging him for mercy.
  • God promises to forgive us because Jesus already paid for our sins on the cross
    • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9)

  24. Gospel: Faith

  • Believe in Jesus

  25. Gospel: Faith

  • To have faith, means
    • To have knowledge of God and His promises (as they are revealed to us in the Bible)
    • To trust Him to be a promise-keeping God
    • To give myself over to Him completely because I trust Him with my life

  26. Gospel: Faith

  • God’s promise
    • “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
    •  “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day (John 6:40)
    • “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you… If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:9,13)
    • “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus… Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father’.” (Galatians 3:26, 4:6)
  • To have faith, therefore, means
    • To stop trying to save yourself
    • To trust with all your heart that Christ Jesus saved you by dying on the cross for your sins
    • That He rose from the dead, and that the Father sent the Spirit of the risen Christ into your heart, making you spiritually alive, so you can have a personal relationship with Him and call Him Father!

  27. The Commitment

  • Do you want to receive this gift of eternal life?
  • You can pray this prayer with me to respond, in faith, to God’s invitation to spend eternity with Him. With these words you can give your life into His Hand:
    • “Dear Father God, You said that You want to be my God. I really want to be Your child. By Your Grace, I have turned around and come back to You. I confess that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sin, and I know that You will forgive me because Your Son Jesus died on the cross, also for me. I entrust my whole life to You, no matter what it may cost.  Lord Jesus, I believe that You will raise me also to life on the last day when You come again, according to Your promise. I open the door of my life, so that you can come in as my Lord and my God. Father, I pray now that you send the Spirit of your Son into my heart. Thank you Father! In your Name Lord Jesus. Amen”

  28. The Commitment: Assurance

  • You’ve accepted Jesus Christ, through faith, as the Lord of your Life! You have received Eternal Life!
    • “..by grace you have been saved, through faith…” (Ephesians 2:8)
    • “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy” (Titus 3:5)

29. The Commitment: Assurance

    • “… to all who receive Him, to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)
    •  “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father accept through Me.’” (John 14:6)
    • “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:12)
    • “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)
    • “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:28)

  30. Gratitude

  • Why do we still have to live a Christian life loving God above all, and our neighbour as ourselves?
  • The reason is not to save ourselves, but to thank God for giving us eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord, as a gracious gift
    •  “… offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.” (Romans 12:1)
